| Item Description: | Our Story Wheels to Heal was founded in 2015 with the chance discovery of used wheelchairs destined for scrap and landfill. This led to the question – could they be reused elsewhere? A post was shared on Facebook and the answer was an empathetic “Yes”. Since then with the help of many conscientious people this grassroots volunteer led project that combines both environment and humanitarian objectives has recycled over 5000 wheelchairs and 1500 mobility related items such as zimmer frames, walking sticks, collators, commodes, shower seats bath lifts / hoists, medical beds and much more. With the help of partners on the ground these have been sent to countries where many disabled people are in desperate need of the gift of mobility; Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Countries which suffer internally from a lack of affordability, access, stigma, awareness of disability, or from years of war and conflict leading to a huge increase in disabled people. Our quarterly FREE uplift service is utilised by hundreds of care homes and an increasing number of households in the U.K. We are a registered U.K. charity with a 100% donation policy. This increases to 125% with Gift Aid. The charity is run entirely by volunteers and all donations are used for direct costs in securing, storing, shipping and promoting the project. £25 is all it costs to recycle one wheelchair and transform the life of a disabled person in desperate need of the gift of mobility. 16p a day (a regular donation of £5 a month) will help recycle two wheelchairs and two Zimmer frames per year and help give the gift of mobility to the disabled in need.
